⚽🎰 Sports Bonus or Casino Bonus: Which One Should You Take If You Do Both?

Same percentage, same cap, half the wagering on the sports side… and yet the sports bonus is usually the harder one to unlock. The full maths on a €100 deposit.

At a casino that is also a sportsbook, you often have to choose between the casino bonus and the sports bonus on your first deposit. The short answer: if you mostly play slots, take the casino bonus, even with twice the wagering. x15 wagering on 3-leg accumulators costs more on average than x30 on 96% RTP slots, because an accumulator stacks the bookmaker’s margin on every leg.

The sports bonus is still worth it in one case: when you would have placed those accumulators anyway. Below are the numbers, a simulation of both offers from the same casino, and a simple guide to choosing based on how you play.

Two offers from the same casino, side by side

Take a real case: Velobet, which offers a casino package and a sports bonus on the first deposit that cannot be combined. Terms as listed in our review, for a €100 deposit:

For a €100 depositCasino bonus (1st deposit)Sports bonus
Offer150% up to €1,000 + 300 FS150% up to €1,000
Bonus received€150 + 300 FS€150
Wageringx30 on deposit + bonusx15 on deposit + bonus
Total stakes required€7,500€3,750
What countsSlots (table and live games count far less), max bet €5Accumulators of 3+ legs, minimum odds of 1.3 per leg
Average loss over that volume€300 (96% RTP)€511 (5% margin per leg)

Average loss = total stakes × the share kept by the casino or bookmaker. The 5% margin is an assumption: the real one depends on the bookmaker, the sport and the market (see below). The 300 free spins in the casino bonus are not counted.

On paper, the sports bonus asks for half the stakes. But each euro staked on an accumulator costs about 3.4 times more than a euro staked on a slot: the expected loss on the sports wagering (€511) ends up higher than on the casino wagering (€300), and both exceed the €250 starting balance. In other words, either way, clearing the wagering is the exception, not the rule.

Why accumulators are so expensive

A bookmaker does not price at “fair” odds: it keeps a margin. On a single bet with a 5% margin you get back 95.2% of your stakes on average. On an accumulator, the margins multiply: with 3 legs you are down to 86.4%. That is exactly what the “accumulators of 3+ legs” condition forces on you.

Margin per legSingle bet return3-leg accumulator returnAverage loss on €3,750 of accumulators

8%92.6%79.4%€773
Slot, 96% RTP96% returned per spin€300 on €7,500 (x30 wagering)

Return = 1 / (1 + margin)n for n legs. Even as singles, €3,750 of stakes at a 5% margin would cost €179 on average.

The threshold is clear: you would need a bookmaker with a margin below 3% per leg for x15 accumulator wagering to cost roughly the same as x30 casino wagering. On niche markets (lower leagues, specials), margins are generally higher than on headline fixtures.

Work out a bookmaker’s margin in 10 seconds

Add up the inverse of every price in the same market. Example, a match priced 1.80 / 3.60 / 4.50 (home / draw / away): 1/1.80 + 1/3.60 + 1/4.50 = 1.056. The margin on that market is 5.6%. Try it on two or three matches you usually bet on before choosing a sports bonus.

The simulation: who clears the wagering?

The average loss is not the whole story: a lucky player can finish the wagering with a healthy balance. So we simulated 400,000 runs for each way of playing, all from the same €250 balance (€100 deposit + €150 bonus). Casino side: 3,750 spins at €2 on our model slots with a 96% RTP. Sports side: 375 accumulators at €10, 5% margin per leg.

Sports: 3 legs at 2.00 (total odds 8)12.1%11.6%9.3%

Monte Carlo simulation, 400,000 runs per row: bets continue until the required stakes are reached or the balance hits zero. Illustrative models, not real games or bookmakers; difference between two runs under 0.2 points.

Three takeaways. First, the casino bonus on a low-volatility slot is the most favourable option: about one player in 4 clears the wagering. Second, on the sports side, “safe short prices” are the worst choice: stringing together accumulators at the 1.3 minimum, only 5.9% of runs get there, because you pay the margin over and over for tiny wins. Finally, aiming for bigger odds helps a little, but does not catch up with the casino bonus.

With accumulators at 1.60 per leg, a bet lands roughly once in 4.7. Over 375 accumulators, a losing streak of fifteen to twenty in a row is nothing unusual, which means €150 to €200 gone from a €250 balance.

It all depends on the bookmaker: the margin effect

The same simulation (3 legs at 1.60, €10 a bet), changing only the margin per leg:

Margin per legSports wagering clearedFinished with at least €100
3%23.2%21.5%
5%10.1%8.9%
8%2%1.6%

At a 3% margin, the sports bonus draws level with the casino bonus played on a low-volatility slot (24.8%). At 8%, it becomes almost impossible to unlock. That is why the margin check in the box above is worth more than any bonus percentage.

Sports offers at the hybrid casinos we list

Several casinos we list also run a sportsbook. Their sports offers, as recorded in our reviews:

CasinoSports offer
Velobet150% up to €1,000 from €10, x15 wagering on deposit + bonus, accumulators of 3+ legs at minimum odds of 1.3; cannot be combined with the casino package
Celsius50% up to €200 then 20% up to €500 on the first two sports deposits; our listing shows x40 wagering, without the base or minimum odds
HeavyBetSports welcome offer in the form of a free bet, separate from the casino package
SpinangaSports bonus separate from the casino welcome offer
Go4CasinoSports bonus separate from the casino bonus, with its own wagering terms
BetFuryWeekly sports bonus based on the previous week’s bets (no sports welcome offer)

Where the sports terms are not spelled out (wagering base, minimum odds, number of legs, time limit), ask support before depositing: without them there is no way to tell what the offer is worth. For standalone bookmakers, see our sports betting bonus comparison.

Which bonus fits the way you play

You…Our advice
mostly play slots and bet now and thenCasino bonus. Bet on sport with real money, as singles, once the wagering is finished or abandoned.
regularly bet accumulators of 3+ legsSports bonus, provided the required stakes (€3,750 for a €100 deposit here) match what you would bet anyway within the time limit.
mostly bet singlesNeither is built for you: the sports bonus would force you to change how you bet. Playing without a bonus means you can withdraw at any time.
mostly play live casino or table gamesNeither: these games count little or nothing towards casino wagering. Look at cashback or no-wager casinos instead.
want to withdraw quicklyNo bonus. While wagering is in progress, your winnings stay locked.

Either way, run the numbers with your own deposit in our bonus calculator, and check the other terms that affect an offer’s value (max bet, time limit, win cap) in our article on hidden casino bonus rules.

⚠️ A bonus should not change the way you play

The classic sports bonus trap: betting more often, on matches you do not follow, in accumulators you would never normally place, just to “unlock” the money. The simulations show that in the vast majority of cases the balance runs out first. Set a budget in advance, use your account’s deposit limits and stop if gambling stops being fun. Our responsible gambling page points you to help.

Checklist before choosing between a sports and a casino bonus

  • Check whether the two bonuses can be combined or whether you must pick one on your first deposit
  • Work out the total stakes required: wagering × base (bonus only, or deposit + bonus)
  • Sports side: minimum number of legs, minimum odds, excluded bet types
  • Casino side: max bet, excluded games, how much table and live games count
  • Work out the bookmaker’s margin on two or three matches you usually bet on
  • Ask yourself whether that volume matches what you would play anyway

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to take the sports bonus or the casino bonus?

If you mostly play slots, the casino bonus. In our simulation on a €100 deposit (a €150 bonus either way), the x30 casino bonus gets cleared 24.8% of the time on a low-volatility slot, against 10.1% for the x15 sports bonus played as 3-leg accumulators at 1.60 per leg. The sports bonus only makes sense if you would have placed those accumulators anyway.

How can x15 sports wagering cost more than x30 casino wagering?

Because what matters is not the multiplier but the average loss per euro staked. A slot with a 96% RTP keeps 4% of stakes; a 3-leg accumulator with a bookmaker taking a 5% margin per leg keeps about 13.6%. Over €3,750 of accumulators that is an average loss of €511, against €300 over €7,500 of slot spins.

Can you combine a sports bonus and a casino bonus?

It depends on the casino. Some make you pick a single bonus on your first deposit, others run separate offers for each section, claimed on different deposits. As a rule, casino bets do not count towards a sports bonus and vice versa: the terms say which bets count.

How do you work out a bookmaker’s margin?

Add up the inverse of every price in the same market. For a match priced 1.80 / 3.60 / 4.50: 1/1.80 + 1/3.60 + 1/4.50 = 1.056. The 5.6% above 1 is the bookmaker’s margin on that market.

Is a free bet better than a bonus in cash?

They are different products. A free bet usually returns only the net winnings, not the stake, but often comes without a large wagering requirement. A cash bonus on your deposit is worth more on paper, but accumulator wagering can make it very hard to unlock. Always compare the total stakes required and the minimum odds.
