Some casinos require you to bet each deposit once or several times before you can withdraw, even if you declined the bonus. With a 3x rule and a β¬50 deposit, you need β¬150 in bets before your first withdrawal request. In our selection, Lussurio and WelleBet apply this rule at 3x.
The rule exists to stop a gaming account from becoming a simple pipe for moving money around. It costs little if you were going to play your deposit anyway, but it blocks anyone who wants their money back without playing. Here is how it works and how it differs from bonus wagering.
Deposit wagering vs bonus wagering: three rules not to mix up
1. Playing through your deposit (1x to 3x)
A withdrawal rule, not a bonus rule. It applies to every deposit, with or without a bonus, and covers the money you put in. You will find it in the withdrawal section of the terms.
2. Bonus wagering (30x to 50x)
Only for players who accept a bonus. It applies either to the bonus alone or to deposit + bonus, which often doubles the turnover. Our guide to the hidden rules of a casino bonus covers it in detail.
3. The 1x wagering bonus
A bonus you only need to bet once before its winnings can be withdrawn. Unrelated to the deposit rule: it is an offer, and one of the best around. See our no-wager casino guide.
When players search for "1x deposit wagering", it is usually the first rule that has caught them out: a withdrawal declined with a message saying the deposit must be wagered, although no bonus was ever activated.
Why casinos make you play your deposit
An online casino takes money in by card, bank transfer, e-wallet or crypto and pays it out through other channels. Without safeguards, someone could deposit with a stolen card or money of dubious origin, play nothing, then withdraw to a crypto wallet: the money would come out looking clean, with a casino statement as paperwork.
Licensing authorities, offshore ones included, require operators to run anti-money-laundering procedures. Deposit wagering is one of them, alongside identity verification (KYC) and the common rule that withdrawals go back to the deposit method where possible. Our casino licences guide explains what each regulator expects.
For most players the rule goes unnoticed: if you deposit to play, you bet your deposit several times over during a session. It shows up in two situations: you deposit and change your mind, or you win big early and want to cash out before reaching the turnover.
Casinos in our selection that apply it
Taken from our published reviews. A paused casino drops out of this table automatically.
| Casino | Deposit rule | For a β¬50 deposit | Welcome bonus wagering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lussurio | Each deposit wagered 3x before withdrawal | β¬150 in bets | x30 (deposit + bonus) |
| WelleBet | Each deposit wagered 3x before withdrawal | β¬150 in bets | x30 (deposit + bonus) |
We also found a variant in another review: no block, but an 8% fee on the withdrawal if the deposit was not wagered at least once. For the other casinos in our selection, our reviews mention no rule of this kind, which does not guarantee there is none: the withdrawal section of the terms is what counts.
What the rule costs on average
On a slot that pays back 96% of stakes (its RTP), each euro bet costs 4 cents on average. Wagering your deposit once therefore costs about 4% of it, and three times about 12%.
| Deposit | Bets at 1x | Average loss at 1x | Bets at 3x | Average loss at 3x |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| β¬20 | β¬20 | β¬0.8 | β¬60 | β¬2.4 |
| β¬50 | β¬50 | β¬2 | β¬150 | β¬6 |
| β¬100 | β¬100 | β¬4 | β¬300 | β¬12 |
| β¬500 | β¬500 | β¬20 | β¬1,500 | β¬60 |
These are averages: over β¬150 of bets, the real outcome can be a win or a loss far bigger than β¬6, especially on a highly volatile slot. The rule does not take money from you by itself; it keeps you exposed to the game for a set amount of betting.
In spins, for a β¬50 deposit to be wagered 3x (β¬150):
| Stake per spin | Spins needed |
|---|---|
| β¬0.2 | 750 spins |
| β¬0.5 | 300 spins |
| β¬1 | 150 spins |
| β¬2 | 75 spins |
Raising your stake to get there faster does not change the average loss (that depends on total turnover, not the number of spins), but it makes your balance far more volatile.
Same β¬100 deposit, three conditions compared
To see how much the deposit rule really weighs, here is the turnover and average expected loss (96% RTP) on a β¬100 deposit, depending on the condition you must meet before withdrawing.
| Condition | Example | Turnover | Average loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deposit wagered 3x, no bonus | Lussurio | β¬300 | β¬12 |
| β¬150 bonus at 1x wagering | Kings Chance | β¬150 | β¬6 |
| β¬200 bonus at 30x on deposit + bonus | Lussurio | β¬9,000 | β¬360 |
The deposit rule is light next to standard bonus wagering. And if you accept a bonus wagered on deposit + bonus, you meet it along the way: β¬9,000 in bets is far more than 3 times the deposit. Conversely, declining the bonus to withdraw quickly does not exempt you from wagering your deposit at casinos that require it. Our bonus calculator runs these numbers for any offer.
Withdrawal declined: "you must wager your deposit"
If your withdrawal is blocked for this reason, here is what to do:
- Ask support for the remaining turnover. The casino knows exactly how much you have bet since your last deposit; get the figure in writing (chat or email).
- Check which games count. The terms do not always say for this rule: ask whether live casino or sports bets count before playing the rest.
- Play the rest at low stakes on a high-RTP game if you want to keep the average loss down, then request the withdrawal again.
- If you would rather not play, ask whether the unplayed deposit can be refunded. Some casinos agree, sometimes for a fee; it is never guaranteed.
If the casino invokes this rule although the turnover has been reached, or refuses to give you the figure, our guide on pending or declined withdrawals explains how to challenge it.
β οΈ Only deposit what you plan to play
At a casino that requires deposits to be wagered, the money you deposit is no longer really available: getting it back means playing it, and accepting you may lose some or all of it. Deposit in small amounts, set a deposit limit in your account, and do not reload to "unlock" a withdrawal beyond your budget. If gambling is becoming hard to control, our responsible gambling page points you to help.
Check before you deposit
- The withdrawal section of the terms: deposit wagered 1x, 3x, or a fee?
- Whether the rule applies to every deposit or only the first
- Which games count towards the turnover
- The bonus wagering and what it applies to (bonus only or deposit + bonus)
- The withdrawal method available for your deposit method
- A deposit limit set in your account
Frequently asked questions
What does "1x deposit wagering" mean?
It means you must bet at least the amount of your deposit once before you can request a withdrawal. With a β¬50 deposit, you need β¬50 in total bets, whether you won or lost along the way. With a 3x rule, that becomes β¬150.
Does the rule apply if I decline the bonus?
Yes. That is the difference with bonus wagering: the deposit rule covers the money you deposit, with or without a bonus. Declining the bonus removes the bonus wagering, not the obligation to play through your deposit.
Why do casinos make you wager your deposit?
To stop a gaming account being used to move money without playing, for instance depositing by card and withdrawing in crypto or to another account. It is an anti-money-laundering and anti-fraud measure that sits alongside identity checks.
What happens if I request a withdrawal before wagering my deposit?
Depending on the casino, the withdrawal is declined until the turnover is reached, a fee is deducted from the amount, or the payments team asks for extra documents. The withdrawal section of the terms says which applies.
Do winnings count towards the turnover?
Turnover is counted on bets, not on your balance: every bet counts for its stake, whether it is placed with your deposit or with winnings. A big early win does not exempt you from reaching the required turnover.
