Blackjack has the lowest house edge in an online casino — provided you pick the right table and play basic strategy. Evolution’s live tables show a 99.28% RTP (Live Blackjack) and 99.47% (Infinite Blackjack). But a single bad rule, such as blackjack paying 6 to 5, is enough to triple or quadruple the casino’s edge.

This guide doesn’t repeat basic strategy (it’s covered in our blackjack strategy guide). It answers a different question: which table to play online, and what to watch out for.

RNG or live blackjack: what’s the difference?

RNG blackjack (or “virtual”) draws cards with a random number generator. Hands go by in seconds, minimum bets are often very low and a free demo is usually available. The downside is pace: more hands per hour means more money exposed to the house edge.

Live blackjack is played against a real dealer filmed in a studio, using an 8-deck shoe. The pace is slower (which limits losses per hour) and you see the cards physically dealt. Classic tables have 7 seats; when they’re full, Bet Behind lets you bet on a seated player’s hand. “Infinite” variants have no seat limit: every player gets the same starting cards and makes their own decisions.

The table rules that change the house edge

With basic strategy and favourable rules, the house edge sits around 0.5%. Each less favourable rule pushes it up. These figures come from Wizard of Odds’ reference calculations, widely used by game analysts:

RuleFavourableUnfavourableCost to you
Blackjack payout3 to 26 to 5+1.39 points
Dealer on soft 17 (Ace + 6)StandsHits+0.2 points
Double after splitAllowedNot allowed+0.14 points
DoublingAny first two cards10 and 11 only+0.18 points
Number of decks1 deck8 decks+0.5 to 0.6 points

The rule to check before anything else: the blackjack payout. At 3 to 2, a blackjack on a €10 bet pays €15; at 6 to 5, only €12. That difference alone adds about 1.4 points to the casino’s edge — nearly three times the edge of a good table. The rules are always listed in the table’s help menu: check them before the first hand.

The most-played live variants

Live Blackjack (Evolution)

Optimal RTP: 99.28%

The classic 7-seat table, 8 decks, with Bet Behind and two side bets. The benchmark for playing basic strategy.

Infinite Blackjack (Evolution)

Optimal RTP: 99.47%

Unlimited seats and low stakes. The dealer stands on soft 17, and the “Six Card Charlie” rule makes a six-card hand of 21 or less an automatic win.

Side bets are expensive. 21+3 (your two cards plus the dealer’s upcard form a poker hand) shows a 96.30% RTP, and Perfect Pairs 95.90% on Evolution’s Live Blackjack — a house edge 5 to 6 times that of the main hand. Keep them for fun, with small stakes.

Blackjack and casino bonuses: the classic trap

Because blackjack’s house edge is so low, casinos protect their bonuses: blackjack is often excluded from wagering or only partly counted, and some casinos ban it while a bonus is active. Playing blackjack on a bonus without reading these rules can get your winnings voided. Before accepting a bonus, look for “restricted games” and “wagering contribution” in the terms — our article on hidden bonus rules shows where to find them, and the bonus calculator works out how much you’ll need to wager.

⚠️ The 4 most expensive mistakes

  • Playing a 6-to-5 table: about +1.4 points of edge for the casino, in one go.
  • Taking insurance: basic strategy never takes it.
  • Piling on side bets: 21+3 and Perfect Pairs pay back much less than the main hand.
  • Playing on gut feeling: without basic strategy, the house edge climbs to several points.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best RTP in online blackjack?

With basic strategy, Evolution’s live tables show 99.28% for classic Live Blackjack and 99.47% for Infinite Blackjack. That’s among the highest RTPs in the casino — as long as you play every hand correctly and skip insurance and side bets.

Is online blackjack rigged?

At a live table, cards are genuinely dealt by a filmed dealer from an 8-deck shoe. At an RNG table, cards are drawn by a certified random number generator. Either way, the casino wins through the mathematical edge built into the rules, not by manipulating cards.

Should you take insurance in blackjack?

No. Insurance pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack, but it costs more than it returns over time. Basic strategy never takes it.

Can you play blackjack with a casino bonus?

Often not well. Many casinos exclude blackjack from wagering or only count it in part, and some ban it entirely while a bonus is active. Read the “restricted games” and “contribution” sections of the terms before accepting a bonus.

What is Bet Behind?

At 7-seat live tables, Bet Behind lets you bet on a seated player’s hand when every seat is taken. You follow their decisions without being able to influence them.
